It’s rather ridiculous isn’t it, that we as adults and parents pose as bearers of truths that we think children are yet to learn?  But think about it.  A child is innately joyful, playful and spontaneous until we get involved!  They don’t need telling how to be curious or even humane.  They know that feeling connected to each other is the top and bottom of life itself which is why they cry when they need picking up; that’s why they yell when they think something is unjust.

They are naturals at real life. We are often the ones lost in the fuzz and fog of our fear- laced experience.

Umbilika is a firm believer that adults are not here to teach children about how to do life but to simply support, grow and give a voice to their natural connection to what is good and true.

Meet Zara, aged 15.

In Zara’s English class they were discussing body image in modern day media and the detrimental effects it has on young people.

They were consequently given the task of writing a short poem in class.

Here is her poem.

Fat, chubby, plump, overweight
By the way they talk, she only has one trait.
Ew, gross, it’s really just too much,
Cellulite and stretch marks – disgusting to touch.

You can’t wear this; horizontal’s not your stripe,
If you don’t lose weight, you’ll never be his type.
Cover up at the beach – make sure it doesn’t show,
If people end up seeing, they’ll never let it go.

It’s not like she has a brain, or matter in her mind,
As all that you see is aesthetically-underlined.
She’s a person. She has feelings. That’s all that’s left to say.
She really doesn’t need your pointing each and every day.

Zara Bomanji, age 15

Pretty awesome wouldn’t you say?  Rather on point?

Clarity often comes in smaller packages.  Wisdom is not age-ist.
